I am Devanshi Singh. I am an 8th grader with autism spectrum disorder and
communicate through writing and typing. I live with my parents and my little
feathered friend. I aspire to be a researcher one day to find and eradicate
causes of autism.

I like to spend my free time colouring mandala art and also engage in other art work. I love to play different sports and really look forward to go on vacations with my family and explore new places.

I was really happy reading the book as it featured my lived experience. These
moments of empathy are really close to my heart, as often I get weird looks
from people when they realize I can’t speak or have autism. I really cherish
the moments with my primary teacher who really understood me and my pain.

The illustrations of the book are really beautiful. It makes the book more
attractive and fun to read. I felt special that this book is about my real-life
experiences.

I think inclusion is still a long way from being introduced, especially in regular
schools and in our society. People still segregate us special needs individuals,
they still think we have limited understanding just because we can’t speak or
behave differently. Real inclusion will be to treat us equally as anyone else.
We all deserved to be accepted, respected and treated with dignity everywhere in our society. I really don’t want anyone’s sympathy, but empathy and equal treatment is really appreciated.
